Hugh Freeze Named Auburn's New Head Football Coach

The 4-Time Associated Press High School Coach of the Year

Auburn University has announced the hiring of Hugh Freeze as its 31st head football coach in the school's 129-year history. Freeze, who was born on September 27, 1969, comes to Auburn after a successful stint as head coach at Liberty University. At Liberty, Freeze led the Flames to four bowl games and a top-25 finish in the final Coaches Poll.

A Proven Winner

Freeze is a proven winner at both the high school and collegiate levels. He was named the Associated Press High School Coach of the Year four times while at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee.

After moving to the college ranks, Freeze led Ole Miss to three bowl games in five seasons and won the SEC Western Division title in 2015. He also helped develop several NFL players, including quarterback Chad Kelly and wide receiver A.J. Brown.

The Risk and Reward

The hiring of Freeze comes with both upside and risk for Auburn. Freeze is a proven winner, but he also has a history of NCAA violations at Ole Miss. Auburn will need to be diligent in monitoring Freeze's program to ensure that he complies with all NCAA rules.

However, if Freeze can keep his program clean and win games, he has the potential to be a great success at Auburn. He is a charismatic leader and a proven recruiter. He also has a strong offensive mind, which could help Auburn's offense improve in 2023.
