Election Commission Notification under Section 56 of the Representation of the People Act 1951

Increase of Hours of Poll

In a significant move to ensure wider participation and convenience for voters in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced an increase in the hours of polling. This decision is aimed at providing ample time for citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote and ensure a seamless electoral process.

As per the ECI's notification, the polling hours will be extended from the previous 8 AM to 5 PM to 7 AM to 6 PM. This two-hour extension will allow more voters to participate in the democratic exercise, especially those who may have work or other commitments during the original polling hours.

The decision is particularly crucial in light of the anticipated high voter turnout for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the extension, the ECI aims to accommodate the increased number of voters and reduce the waiting time at polling stations, thus ensuring a smoother and more efficient voting experience for all.
