Two of Whatcom County's most successful high school football programs will renew their rivalry Saturday when Anacortes and Mount Vernon open the 2023 season at Civic Field.

The Seahawks and Bulldogs will meet for the 91st time in a series that dates back to 1923. The teams have split the last two meetings, with Mount Vernon winning 21-7 in 2021 and Anacortes prevailing 20-14 last year.

Both Anacortes and Mount Vernon are coming off successful seasons in 2022. The Seahawks went 8-3 overall and reached the Class 2A state playoffs, while the Bulldogs finished 7-4 and advanced to the Class 3A state playoffs.

Both teams have a number of key players returning this season. Anacortes is led by senior quarterback Cade Hebert, who passed for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. Mount Vernon is led by senior running back Jayden Hampton, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 15 touchdowns last year.
