Italian Boxer Quits Bout, Refuses to Fight Transgender Opponent
Controversy Erupts at Paris Olympics
Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who are cisgender women, competed in the Tokyo Olympics without incident.
The Paris Olympics have been rocked by controversy after Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her bout against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif after only 46 seconds on Thursday. Carini refused to continue fighting after Khelif was revealed to be a transgender woman. This is the first such incident at the Olympics.
Transgender boxer Hergie Bacyadan is set to make history in Paris as he competes in the women's boxing division. This will be the first time a transgender boxer has competed in the Olympics.
